What is the Badger Cull?
The Badger Cull is a government plan to reduce bovine tuberculosis (TB) in cattle which will mean shooting badgers with high-velocity rifles.
It is a very controversial plan and its productivity is debated by people from all over Great Britain. A YouGov poll shows that only 12 percent of the English public think shooting badgers should be the main method of reducing spread of the disease, while 60 percent favor vaccines for the disease, and only 31 percent support the badger cull. (Source:The Daily Activist).
Also, there is no scientific evidence to show that the badger cull will be beneficial, and scientists across the board have said that it will in fact make matters worse.
Two pilot areas are going to be Somerset and Gloucestershire in the Autumn of 2012 unless it can be stopped, and many local people have expressed their feelings, sadly to no avail.
It has been well documented that in Wales a planned cull has been scrapped due to a lack of scientific evidence and and a very influential number of campaigners against the plan. Instead, the Welsh Government have decided to vaccinate the badger and control cattle transportation and trade, as this have been proven to work more efficiently and will be a more humane, sensible and productive way of controlling TB in cattle overall.
Many famous people and people have stepped up to protect the badgers, including Bill Oddie and Brian May. You can read about what they have said in our news section.
