Dear....
I am writing to you to express my concern of a particular matter, and I hope you will take the time to read through the information in this email carefully. I would be grateful of your co-operation in this.
The matter I am concerned about is the proposed Badger Cull in England. I have collected some data, statistics and quotes from various places across the internet, that in my mind, provide a rather poignant reminder of the reality of the situation.
The first point I am going to make is that the scientific proof that mass wildlife shootings will help is simply non-existent. In fact, various sources have said that it will indeed make matters worse. Local news website 'This is Cornwall' published an article in May stating from a trusted source, that Derek Mead, a former contender for the presidency of the National Farmers' Union, has said that killing badgers will not help people 'get a grip' on TB. The article also says "After the foot and mouth epidemic of the mid-2000s affected farms were restocked with cattle mostly untested before movement. And still the testing regime in England allows four years to elapse between tests in some areas, with regular and scandalous breaches of movement restrictions belatedly imposed in 2006 as well as shameful backlogs for testing. That is why the disease grew in cattle, by far the greatest reservoir of infection."
Which brings me onto my next point. There is substantial scientific evidence that shows cattle transportation to be a main factor in the spread of bovine TB. This is one of the main reasons why the Welsh Government have scrapped plans of a badger cull, in favour of a new vaccination scheme. They argue that this would be far more effective, humane and sensible.
Another point that may be made is the fact that the idea of a badger cull is not popular amongst the British public. "It said a new YouGov poll shows that only 12 percent of the public in England think shooting badgers should be the Government’s main focus to reduce TB in cattle." Source:www.farmersguardian.com "A YouGov poll shows that only 12 percent of the English public think shooting badgers should be the main method of reducing spread of the disease, while 60 percent favor vaccines for the disease, and only 31 percent support the badger cull."
